Cala d'Or is spread around a series of small coves rather than one long beach, so where your villa sits shapes your holiday. The resort has three main parts: the centre and marina, Cala Egos to the west, and Cala Ferrera to the east.

Most days in Cala d'Or revolve around the sea, from lazy mornings in the coves to boat trips along the coast. Beyond the beach, there's golf, local history and some of Majorca's best-known day trips within an hour's drive.

Take a boat trip from the marina

The marina is one of the largest on the island and the starting point for sailing tours, glass-bottom boat trips and private yacht charters. It's the easiest way to see the coves you can't reach on foot.

Explore Mondragó Natural Park

This protected park covers around 1,893 acres of dunes, ravines, pine woods and farmland, with walking trails and plenty of birdlife. Combine a walk with a swim at one of its beaches.

Visit Es Fortí

An 18th-century fortress on the edge of the resort, with its original cannons still in place and good views over the coast. Children usually enjoy exploring it.

Cala d'Or means "golden cove", and the resort is built around a string of small sandy bays rather than one long stretch of sand. The water is generally calm and shallow, which makes them good for families, but the most central coves get busy in July and August.

Cala Gran

The biggest beach in Cala d'Or, with sunbeds, parasols, beach bars and lifeguards on duty in summer. It's the easiest choice with young children; in peak season, arrive early to get a spot.

Cala Esmeralda

Named for its emerald-green water, this smaller cove sits next to Cala Gran. It's surrounded by hotels, so it can get busy, but it still feels intimate. Ladders on the rocks let confident swimmers reach deeper water.

Cala d'Or (Caló de ses Dones)

The small beach the resort is named after, a few minutes' walk from the centre. Handy for a quick swim before lunch in town.

The marina is lined with seafood restaurants overlooking the yachts, and the pedestrianised centre has plenty of cafés, tapas bars and family-friendly terraces. For something more traditional, head to the local spots where Majorcans eat.

Plaza del Pinar

A cosy restaurant tucked away from the main streets and a favourite with locals. Try the spicy roasted snails with chorizo, meatballs in a rich sauce, or frito mallorquín, a traditional dish made with offal, with a glass of local wine.

Norai, Porto Petro

In the neighbouring harbour village of Porto Petro, a few minutes' drive from Cala d'Or, Norai is ideal for a romantic seafood dinner at sunset. Start with grilled scallops, follow with fish straight from the grill, and ask for a Majorcan wine to match.

Cala d'Or is lively in the evenings, but it isn't a party resort. Expect cocktail bars, live music and late dinners by the marina rather than big clubs, which suits couples and families who want a buzz without the all-night crowds.

On Carrer Boulevard d'Or, a few minutes from the beach, with an open-air terrace and carefully made cocktails, from classic Negronis to Caipirinhas.

The best time for a beach holiday in Cala d'Or is June to September, when average highs reach 27–30°C, and the sea is warm enough for long swims. July and August are the busiest and usually the most expensive weeks to book a villa.

For quieter coves and lower villa prices, go in May, late September or October, when it's still around 23°C. Spring and autumn are also better for walking in Mondragó Natural Park and for day trips inland.

How far is Cala d'Or from Palma airport?

Cala d'Or is around 60 km from Palma de Mallorca airport, about an hour's drive. Flights to Palma take roughly 2.5 hours from most UK airports.

Is Cala d'Or lively?

Cala d'Or has a relaxed but sociable feel. Evenings centre on cocktail bars, live music and restaurants around the marina rather than big nightclubs. If you want a party resort, somewhere like Magaluf will suit you better; if you want a buzz without the crowds, Cala d'Or is a good fit.

Is Cala d'Or expensive?

Cala d'Or is one of Majorca's more upmarket resorts, especially around the marina, but everyday costs are similar to other Spanish resorts. 

Do I need a car in Cala d'Or?

Not if you're staying in the centre, where the beaches, marina and restaurants are within walking distance, and a small road train links the coves. For countryside villas and day trips, we recommend hiring a car.

Is Cala d'Or good for families?

Yes. The beaches are mostly calm and shallow, Cala Gran has lifeguards in summer, and there are boat trips, the Es Fortí fort and Mondragó Natural Park to explore. A villa with a private pool also gives children somewhere to swim away from busy beaches.

What is there to do in Cala d'Or?
