Beaches in Kefalonia

You’ll struggle to find more impressive beaches on any of the Greek Islands than those in Kefalonia. Bright white sand backed by lush green forests and fronted by calm turquoise waters of the Ionian Sean, set the scene for a paradise-like setting, and all accessible from our villas in Kefalonia.

Our villas in Skala, for example, are close to a three-kilometre stretch of sand-and-shingle beach considered the best in southern Kefalonia. And if you drive along the coastal road to the east, you’ll find even more hidden gems.

Ai Helis beach

Quite possibly the best beach in Southern Kefalonia, this sandy beach is within easy reach of the airport and major resorts on the island.

Skala beach

This large sandy beach is within walking distance of the fishing village of Skala. With plenty of watersports and family friendly activities on offer, this beach will keep both children and adults entertained.

Alaties beach

A small, secluded, sandy beach surrounded by a impressive rocky landscape, this hidden beach offers tourists peace and tranquility, with its unspoilt beauty.

Dafnoudi beach

If you want a truly secluded beach, Dafnoudi beach is the one for you. Located at the bottom of a steep valley, the walk to the beach takes around 10 minutes.

Sami Beach

Sami beach is nestled into a cove that offers lots of privacy. It’s also close to Sami Village, which has many great restaurants and cafes. If you enjoy snorkelling, you can rent snorkel gear here to explore underwater.

Lixouri Bay

If you want somewhere remote and quiet where there aren’t too many tourists around this is the perfect beach for you. The beach here has crystal clear waters so it’s ideal if you prefer swimming in calmer conditions rather than waves crashing against your legs all day long.

Myrtos beach

Located 29 km north of the island's capital, Argostoli, Myrtos beach is quite possibly the most famous of all the island's beaches. A large stretch of coastline where white sands meet the turquoise waters, enjoy some truly stunning scenery.

Antisamos beach

Located 31km north east of Argostoli and 4km away from Sami, this gorgeous golden beach is surrounded by lush greenery, and is recognisable as one of the settings for the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Nightlife in Kefalonia

Add a touch of glamour to your Kefalonia villa holiday and head to the upmarket harbour in Fiscardo, where you’ll be greeted by luxury wine bars and a range of restaurants.

The liveliest resort is the island’s capital Argostoli, where a number of bars and clubs can be found dotted around the attractive main square. Elsewhere, enjoy a romantic retreat at the smaller resorts’ tavernas which offer a low-key vibe.

Food and Drink in Kefalonia

Not often associated with Greece, but Kefalonia is renowned for its meat pies. Beef, lamb and pork are among the most popular options, and should definitely be sampled during your Kefalonia villa holiday.

Don’t worry though, you can still tuck into all the usual Greek specialities such as moussaka and stifado, which you’ll find at pretty much any restaurant.

History and Culture in Kefalonia

Kefalonia is a beautiful island at the western tip of Greece. It's the largest island in the Ionian Islands, and it's known for its lush green forests and stunning coastlines.

But did you know that Kefalonia is also home to many historical and cultural sites? From Byzantine churches to Venetian castles, there are lots of places on this island where you can learn about its rich history.

The entire island is teeming with historic charm and our luxury villas in Kefalonia are the best hubs to start exploring it all, whether it’s the Drogarati Caves, the Acropolis in Sami, or underground Mycenaean tombs.

Ancient fortifications

You may have heard of the Castle of Agios Georgios, which is located in modern day Argostoli. The first fortifications were built here during the 5th century BC, and they were expanded over the next two millennia. The castle has a museum dedicated to the history of Kefalonia on its grounds, which is well worth seeing if you're interested in learning more about this period.

Ancient city of Argostoli

Visible from all over the Ionian Islands, this archaeological site is one of the most important in Greece and has been under excavation since 2006. It's believed to have been built in the fourth century BC by Dionysius the Elder, ruler of Syracuse (Sicily). The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 375 BC but rebuilt shortly thereafter by his son Dionysius II. The theatre is pretty impressive (once you get past its somewhat shabby exterior.)

Byzantine churches

The Byzantine churches of Kefalonia are the only Byzantine heritage that exists in Greece. Founded during the Ottoman occupation, these architectural monuments are decorated with beautiful mosaics and icons depicting saints, angels and other religious figures.

These churches can be found all over the island, but there are two main ones you should pay a visit to: The Church of Panagia Anafonitria (Our Lady of Good Voyage) in Sami, and one on Mount Aenos called Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas (St Nicolas). This last church was built on top of an ancient temple dedicated to Zeus.

Venetian castles

Kefalonia is also home to several Venetian castles. These were built by the Venetians to defend Kefalonia from pirates and later, the Ottomans. The castles have been carefully restored and are open to visitors today.

Points of interest not to be missed on Kefalonia villa holidays

• Myrtos beach - Myrtos beach, located in Argostoli, is one of the most popular beaches on Kefalonia. An expansive sweep of sand with turquoise waters and a stunning mountain backdrop. It’s very family friendly with facilities for children.

• Sami village and harbour - Sami is a small fishing village home to many artists and craftspeople. The village is located on the west side of the island, near Panormos and Kioni.

• Donkey rides in Fiskardo - Donkey rides in Fiskardo are a great way to explore the island. This can be done on your own, or with a guide. There are many donkey rides available in Fiskardo and they can be arranged through travel agencies.

• Turtle spotting at Argostoli harbour - head down to the port and if you're lucky, you might see a few giant sea turtles basking in the warm Ionian sea, or sunning themselves on the rocks.

• The caves at Melissani lake - These natural limestone caves have been formed by erosion over thousands of years. The name Melissani is derived from the nearby river which flows through them, and they are home to a variety of birds and fish as well as a type of bat that lives there during summer months only.

• Mount Ainos National Park - The mountain of Mount Ainos is the highest peak in Kefalonia and one of the most popular destinations for hikers. It's home to many species of flora and fauna, and is steeped in its own rich history. According to mythology, it was here that Zeus learned how to make thunderbolts with Hephaestus and Athena.

• Monastery of Agios Andreas - The Monastery of Agios Andreas is located in the village of Assos. It was built in the 15th century and has a large church, a museum and an archaeological site where you can explore the remnants of ancient civilizations.

• Drogarati Caves - Drogarati Cave is a natural cave located in the village of Drogarati. The cave is located at an altitude of 930 m above sea level and it has been used as a shelter by people since ancient times.

• Dafnoudi Beach - If you're looking for a beautiful beach near a small village, Dafnoudi is the place to go. Dafnoudi has many quaint restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite to eat or have a drink before heading out on your next adventure.
