Things to do in Amalfi Coast

One of Italy's "must-see" spots, the Amalfi Coast is a fusion of striking architecture, scintillating scenery, beautiful beaches, and rich heritage where you can truly revel in la dolce vita. Whether you’re a history buff with a penchant for ruins, a sun-seeker looking for a beach to laze on, or a food-lover craving authentic Italian cuisine, this extraordinary destination won’t disappoint.

A playground for Rome’s emperors for centuries, an abundance of historical wonders is on your doorstep, with Pompeii, Herculaneum, and lesser-known Paestum and Velia, all within reach. Set sail on the turquoise waters by taking a boat tour to the beautiful cluster of islands at Li Galli Sirenuse, where if you listen carefully, you might be lured by the song of the mythical Sirens.

Dotted throughout the lush landscape are tiny pastel-coloured towns and villages that have remained unchanged for centuries, where you can spend countless hours exploring their cobbled lanes.

Throw yourself into the natural beauty by heading to the Ferrier Valley Nature Reserve, with hiking trails that weave through the lemon groves, plummeting gorges, cascading waterfalls, and flora-clad valleys.

Classical music fans will be wowed in Ravello, an ornate hilltop town that comes alive with its countless outdoor concerts. If shopping is on your mind, Sorrento and Positano are home to vibrant shopping scenes where you can hunt for leather goods at bustling markets, or indulge in designer labels at stylish fashion boutiques.

Beaches in Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is packed with quiet and scenic corners, with crops of pretty pebbly coves hidden beneath soaring rocky cliffs and small inlets. With pastel-coloured towns to discover above and the calm turquoise sea stretching out in front of you, beach days don’t get much better than this.

Up and down Sorrento and Positano are small, picturesque beaches, but you’ll find a long stretch of pristine sand at Maiori filled with loungers and even some water sports if you fancy some action. For a taste of glamour, the Marina Grande in Positano is a favourite for vacationing celebrities, where you can splurge on cocktails at a beach club.

Head away from the regular hotspots and you’re bound to find your own secret little bay along this incredible coastline. For keen explorers, rent out a boat at Marina Grande and keep an eye out for beaches boasting unique black volcanic sand and the glistening emerald cave of Grotta dello Smeraldo.

Spiaggia Grande, Positano

This is the largest and most popular beach in Positano. With crystal clear water and a wide strip of sand, this beach is perfect for sunbathing. It's also known for its impressive views of the town and colourful umbrellas.

Fornillo Beach, Positano

Located just a short walk from the centre of Positano, Fornillo Beach is a quieter alternative to Spiaggia Grande. It's a bit smaller and more secluded, but again with crystal-clear water and a relaxed atmosphere, it has all the amenities you need for a great day at the beach.

Marina Grande Beach, Amalfi

This is the main beach in Amalfi, and it's one of the most popular on the coast. It's a wide strip of sand that stretches along the waterfront, and is surrounded by pastel coloured buildings and local restaurants.

Arienzo Beach, Praiano

A quieter beach located just outside of Positano, and accessible only by boat or a long staircase, this beach is a great spot if you're looking for some peace and quiet away from the crowds. Totally worth getting to, this is one of the most beautiful places on the coast, known for its clear water and incredible views.

Nightlife in Amalfi Coast

Evenings across the Amalfi coast are relatively low-key, centred around enjoying late-night alfresco meals whilst clinking glasses of wine. Head to a pastel-hued coastal town and admire the views from a panoramic cliffside restaurant from its windows and terraces. Inland, you can soak up the local atmosphere with a drink or two at a traditional wine bar, all while staring out over verdant vineyards.

The nightlife gravitates around the glamorous seaside town of Positano, where holidaymakers can dance the night away till the early morning. With rows of chic bars and lively clubs, Music on the Rocks nightclub is one of the trendiest, frequented by celebrities alike. Amalfi Town also has a vibrant social life. Masaniello Art Cafè is a café that opens from morning until night where you can indulge in a cocktail whilst listening to some live music.

Food and Drink in Amalfi Coast

On the Amalfi Coast, dishes are made according to the seasons, served with simplicity using only the freshest ingredients and local produce. This means that all year round there’s a colourful variety on the menus, from fresh asparagus in the spring to black truffles in the autumn.

The bountiful waters deliver appetising seafood fresh from the Tyrrhenian Sea to your plate, or you could always purchase a catch of the day and grill it on your outdoor barbecue. Make sure to try Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, the region’s specialty dish, with light and fluffy potato dumplings mixed in a delicious tomato and mozzarella sauce.

Menus are full of typical Italian favourites, from creamy risottos, fruity gelatos and sumptuous pasta dishes. Seeing as you’re just a short drive away from Naples, the birthplace of pizza, we have a good idea for where you should go for your lunch!

Wash everything down with the treasured local tipple, Limoncello, which is locally made from the region’s fruity Amalfi lemons. Across the coast are restaurants to suit every taste and budget, from extravagant Michelin-star restaurants to quaint family-run eateries overlooking the glistening sea.

History and Culture in Amalfi Coast

This enchanting region is beloved by history buffs, seeped in ancient and fascinating myths, where it is said that sirens lured fishermen to the rocks of Li Galli. You can’t miss the sense of times gone by when wandering Amalfi’s twisting old streets, with the impressive 9th-century cathedral at the town’s cultural heart.

If you’re into hiking, you’ll love the medieval watchtower, Torre dello Ziro, which is perched high above Amalfi, offering unbeatable views across the bay. Don’t forget to stop by Salerno, where the striking cathedral is considered one of the finest in Italy, decorated with intricate mosaics and beautiful architecture across its courtyards, grand hallways, and brick towers.

No trip to Italy is complete without at least one visit to the eerie remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Walk in the footsteps of the ancient Romans in once thriving cities turned into ruins by the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius and frozen in time under a blanket of volcanic ash and pumice.

An easy day trip is to the ruined Greek-Roman city of Paestum, draped with Greek temples, Roman forums, amphitheatres, and crumbling houses. You can’t travel along the coast without tripping over a few charming villages, filled with pastel-painted houses tumbling down the hillsides. Time seems to have stood still in Capo, a colourful hidden village with winding cobbled streets etched in history.

Family-friendly fun

Family-friendly is the basis of the Italian lifestyle, so families can easily slot into the relaxed rhythm of everyday life whilst absorbing the local history at every corner. The Amalfi Coast is packed with activities for families, with pristine sandy beaches to splash around on and scenic boat trips that let you easily see the picturesque beauty of the region. Spend a day filled with adventure and adrenaline crossing daring rope bridges and zip lines at Valle dell'Irno Adventure Park,or jump for joy at the inflatable and trampoline park at Parco degli Ulivi.

For something more serene, visit Salerno’s famous botanic gardens, bursting with plants, fountains, and statues to gaze at during scenic family walks. An activity to sweeten everyone’s day is searching for the best gelato in town! Positano is famous for its incredible gelato shops, with a rainbow of different flavours on offer. Perfect for budding mini-chefs, put your Neapolitan pizza-making skills to the test with a cooking class at one of the region’s many cooking schools. An experience the whole family will enjoy, the Due Golfi Train Tour is a three-hour scenic trip across the countryside where you’ll visit a lemon grove, taste fresh limoncello and foodie delights.

Enjoy a luxury villa holiday on the Amalfi Coast

A dramatic landscape of steep cliffs and mountains that plunge into the sea in theatrical brilliance, with pastel-coloured towns perched above the waves, is the perfect holiday spot. Stretching around the Salerno Gulf, the breathtaking landscape is peppered with pebbly coves, lemon groves, and verdant vineyards.
