Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit in Europe in 2026

Rich history, beautiful beaches, delicious food and stunning nature, that’s just a taste of what it’s like to go on holiday to some of the places to visit in Europe. With some of the most travelled to holiday hotspots in the world, holidaymakers have been enjoying the sun and sea around Europe for centuries. Whether it’s the wide variety of mouth-watering,  good food, the friendly and hospitable locals or simply the thought of lounging by your private pool, there’s plenty to keep you from wanting to go home once you’re on an unforgettable European holiday.

However, the question remains – where do you actually want to go? Becoming overwhelmed with so much choice is a common occurrence, which is why we’ve put together a list of the best places in Europe to travel to! No matter if you’re a beach bum looking to relax on the sand, a culture vampire who wants to suck up every last drop of history and art you can find, an intrepid explorer looking for the next hidden gem to gatekeep, or an island hopper looking for their next secluded stretch of golden sand, there’s something for everyone to be found on a European holiday.

Costal & Beach Destinations

The Algarve

Short haul sunshine doesn’t get much easier than a trip to the Algarve, with its endless stretches of golden sands just begging you to sunbathe on them. There’s so much to say about the Algarve, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best places to visit in Europe, but also quite hard choosing where to start on telling you why you should visit this beautiful region of southern Portugal!

I suppose we’ll start with the question of who is the Algarve a great holiday destination for? Well, the answer may shock you… everyone! A great choice for families, there’s plenty of activities to be found throughout AlbufeiraVilamoura and all the other resorts in the region – such as the Aquashow and Aqualand waterparks, perfect for when you need to find something to keep the younger members of your party entertained.

For couples, there’s plenty of romantic spots ready to be found, especially towards the scenic resort of Carvoeiro. Indulge in the gorgeous, freshly caught seafood at a local restaurant and have a drink or two at some authentic bars, you know you both deserve it!

Be sure to visit the Algarve during the summer and you’ll be treated to sizzling 30°c temperatures, but be prepared for crowds of likeminded tourists enjoying their time on Portugal’s sunny south coast. For a little less hectic time, it’s well worth visiting in September, where you’ll have just as much fun in the sun but avoid the main brunt of the school holiday crowds. Just a 3-hour flight from the UK, the Algarve is also another one of the best places to visit in Europe for a bit of short haul sunshine.

Costa Blanca

Spain is a staple in the tourism world, and for good reason, but when it comes to finding one of the best places in Europe, look no further than the sunny Costa Blanca. Literally translating to “White Coast”, you won’t win any prizes for guessing what most travellers flock to this region for. With sparkling, azure waters and miles upon miles of fine white sand, you really can’t go wrong with a week away in CalpeFinestrat, or any of the other resorts that line the coast.

Embrace the amazing coastal culture and history of Costa Blanca by visiting the impressive churches and castles, such as Castillo de Santa Barbara, visit the breathtaking Guadalest Valley for its stunning reservoir views or have an afternoon full of fun at the many water parks in the region – there’s really something for everyone here.

Now, beyond a good afternoon siesta, there’s one thing that truly sets Spain apart as one of the best places to travel to in Europe, and that is (of course) the food. Small plates of everything from patatas bravas to king prawns, dos cervezas por favor, y uno vino? El bosh! Enjoy a trip to the local restaurants and indulge in expertly cooked fresh seafood, pair it perfectly with a locally made wine and let the evening flow with music and plenty of memories made – almost sounds too dreamy, right?

Kotor

Sticking around the AdriaticKotor is one of the coolest destinations to visit in Europe. Just below Croatia you’ll find Montenegro, and if you keep following the coast you’ll eventually stumble upon the Bay of Kotor and the famous fortified town itself. Surrounded by Venetian fortifications, this beautiful town has become recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries – similarly to Dubrovnik which lies on the same coast but north.

There’s plenty to see around Kotor, including St Sryphon’s Cathedral which was constructed in 1166 – one of only two Roman Catholic cathedrals in all of Montenegro. Also hosting one of the most important festivals in southeast Europe, the Kotor Festival of Theatre for Children, the local community of the town volunteer every year to partake and help with performances by artists of over 30 countries and from 5 different continents – be sure to visit during the May and June for a chance to see these phenomenal acts and displays of artistry.

Berat

As we keep heading south, the hidden gems don’t stop, with Albania being our next stop for one of the best destinations to visit in Europe. Berat is a small city that sits on the Osum river in central Albrania, known for its Ottoman houses that are perched on a hillside. With an ancient stone castle dating back to the 13th century, the history of this charming city will jump out at you as soon as you see the historic stone fortifications that the iconic houses are built upon.

Officially recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2008, the unique architecture paints a picture of the influences that have shaped Berat into the city it has become, from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottomans. Be sure to visit the Church of St Mary of Blachernae, a Byzantine Era church constructed in the 13th century but with roots dating all the way back to 400AD, and you’ll discover 16th century mural paintings created by Nicholas Onufri, the son of Onouphrios Argytes, one of Albania’s most important post medieval painters.

Not enough history for you? The impressive Berat Castle is built atop a rocky hill right on the bank of the river Osum. Burnt down by the Romans and rebuilt during the Byzantine Era, if you visit today, you can see the ruins of the churches and mosque that lay within the wall, a great insight into how religion has made Berat the city that it is.

Islands & Coastal Retreats

Canary Islands

No matter the time of year, you’ll struggle to find a better holiday destination than the Canary Islands – there’s a reason they’ve been known as one of the best places to visit in Europe for years! Benefitting from year round sunshine, warm temperatures, scenic national parks and beaches and with some world renowned attractions, it’s hard to know where to begin when describing this paradisical peninsula.

Whether you choose Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife or Gran Canaria, you’ll always be in for an unforgettable Canary Island holiday. Lanzarote, aka the ‘Island of Fire’, is well known for its rugged, volcanic landscape and the incredible Timanfaya National Park which is the home to many craters and active volcanoes – perfect for hikers looking to crack out their boots and backpacks whilst on holiday!

Fuerteventura is just south from Lanzarote and is the ideal island for beach lovers, with miles and miles of sand dunes and beaches that look out onto the North Atlantic Ocean. Whether it’s the huge Grandes Playas Corralejo or the unique ‘popcorn beach’ Playa del Bajo de la Burra, no two beaches are the same on the island known as ‘the beach of the Canaries’.

Tenerife is really the crowning jewel of the Canaries, or at least the most popular! The ‘Island of Eternal Spring’ is perfect for families looking to explore bustling resorts, with plenty of activities and attractions on offer. Whilst visiting Costa Adeje you can visit Siam Park, which has been officially recognised as the world’s best waterpark – ideal for those with younger members in their party who want nothing more than thrilling slides, big waves and a watery play area!

Got golf on your mind? Gran Canaria has you covered. With plenty of award-winning courses alongside the famous Salobre Leisure Resort, you’ll have ample opportunities to crack out the clubs and work on your putting on some of the best looked after greens in the world. Beyond golf, there’s plenty of beaches to choose from to enjoy the famous Canarian sun all year round, great for those looking to catch a tan before heading home!

As one of the best places to travel to in Europe, you’re truly in for a great escape no matter which Canary Island you choose. Sicily

The largest Mediterranean island and just off Italy’s ‘toe’, Sicily has the perfect mix of culture, beaches and gastronomy, so it’s not hard to see why it’s become one of the best places to visit in Europe! From the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Valley of the Temples, to Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, there’s plenty of internationally recognised things to see that you shouldn’t miss out on when visiting Sicily.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously put it, “to have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything”. As the birthplace of Epicharmus, the inventor of comedy, and Archimedes, one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, there’s so much history for you to dive into as soon as you step foot on this famous island.

From the culture filled capital Palermo, to the quieter beaches, there’s something for everyone to be found on this fantastic island. And let’s not get started on the food, we’ll be here all day! With fantastic wines, incredible pasta and simply divine pizza, Sicily provides a distinctly unique flavour compared to mainland Italy, and is truly one of the best places to visit in Europe for an unforgettable adventure.

Sicily, one of the best European destinations to visit in 2026

Skopelos

A real standout Greek Island, you might recognise Skopelos, but you might not be sure why. Avid musical or ABBA fans may already know this, but Skopelos was home to Hollywood stars as they filmed Mamma Mia on the island’s sunny shores – yes, we give you full permission to recreate the ‘Lay All Your Love on Me’ scene at Kastani Beach. With simply stunning scenery all around the island, it’s really no wonder why Hollywood decided this would be the place to bring the ABBA themed musical to life on the big screen.

Follow Meryl Streep’s footsteps up to the Chapel of Agios Ioannis that sits atop the aptly named Mamma Mia cliff, and you’ll be treated with sensational sunsets and panoramic ocean views – just try your best to not burst into ‘The Winner Takes it All’ as you reach the place that Sophie and Sky get married (late spoiler alert, sorry!)

If you’re not too keen on musicals, rest assured, there’s still plenty of reasons to visit Skopelos, from the beaches to the charming capital of Skopelos Town. Renowned for its bakeries, sea wall walks and spectacular ocean views, it’s well worth spending a day or two exploring everything you can around these enchanting streets. Perfect for a restful retreat, a Skopelos villa holiday is the best way to experience this island and enjoy one of the best places to visit in Europe. Take things at your own pace and enjoy the sun whilst lounging in your private pool – sounds perfect, eh?

Best Places to Visit in Europe by Month / Season

In my opinion, there’s never a bad time to visit any destination, just new opportunities and experiences to be had that may differ from the norm. However, when it comes to making the most of the best destinations to visit in Europe, here’s a little insight on where to go by each season:

Spring: Just as things are starting to get warmer and resorts are slowly starting to open back up, this is the perfect time to visit Dubrovnik. Usually the city is incredibly busy during the summer months, but throughout Spring you can enjoy all the same activities with temperatures warm enough to swim in if you decide to escape on a Croatia villa holiday – you can’t beat having your own private pool!

Summer: Scorching temperatures and beautiful beaches, one of the best places to travel to in Europe during the summer has to be the Algarve. Picture miles and miles of sandy beaches, countless restaurants and bars serving everything from piri piri chicken to freshly caught seafood, and beautiful bars to keep you refreshed and hydrated all day and night. Private pool, delicious drink, sunny skies – an Algarve villa holiday is the best way to experience this Portugese paradise.

Autumn: An autumn escape is perfect for those looking to just kick back, relax and unwind in slightly cooler temperatures, away from the hustle and bustle of busy resorts in the middle of summer. Costa Blanca is an amazing option for this, with a great amount of sunshine just a short flight away from the UK, plenty of bars and restaurants still operating and temperatures still sitting around the 20-degree Celsius mark, perfect for a relaxing Spain villa holiday!

Winter: Well, no prizes for being able to guess what the best destination to visit in Europe for a bit of winter sun is! The Canary Islands have long been the number one spot for holidaymakers looking to catch a tan, with their year-round sunshine and warm temperatures making them a fantastic destination to visit all year round. If a heated private pool and a place in the sun to call your own during these winter months is what you’re after – look no further than a Canary Island villa holiday.

Travel Tips for Europe

Planning a trip to Europe? Here are some essential tips to make sure your holiday is smooth, enjoyable and full of unforgettable experiences:

- Europe offers diverse experiences: From short-haul flights and culture-rich cities to uniquely scenic destinations, Europe has something for everyone.

- Plan ahead: Do your own research or browse our other blogs to map out exactly what you want to do on your trip.
