The bustling resort of Puerto del Carmen, once a small fishing village, now boasts all the facilities and amenities of a Spanish holiday town and is the island’s most popular resort. Choosing a holiday villa in Puerto del Carmen is a great way to enjoy this beautiful part of Lanzarote.

The resort has a beautiful wide sandy beach stretching for five kilometres, which is part of the reason why our luxury villas in Puerto del Carmen are so popular with families. The old town and the harbour, with its seafood restaurants, are well worth a visit.

Getting to a villa in Puerto del Carmen is very easy as the area is situated approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Arrecife Airport and can easily be reached by taxi or car in around 20 minutes.

Things to do whilst staying at a villa in Puerto del Carmen

There are many things to do whilst staying in one of our villas in Puerto del Carmen, from day outs at fun theme parks to visiting volcanoes and riding camels.

There isn’t a market in Puerto del Carmen itself. However, there are markets in Arrecife on a Wednesday, Costa Teguise on Fridays, and Haria on a Saturday – this is a handicraft market where the stall owners produce the goods themselves. There is also a market in Teguise on Sundays – this is the largest and most well-known market.

The Carnival is held in Puerto del Carmen each year in February - this is the largest annual party on the island. Many of the residents along with the tourists dress up and follow the procession of floats and bands, before heading to the all-night party.

The Iron Man is the toughest triathlon in the world and takes place in Puerto del Carmen, around the middle of May.

The end of July and beginning of August signals the ten-day celebration of the Fiesta of Carmen, patron saint of the resort which bears her name. Tourists once again join the local people to watch performances in the harbour square followed by singing and dancing until the early hours of the morning. At the end of the fiesta a flotilla of specially decorated fishing boats sets out to sea to pray for a good catch in the year to come.

At the moment, Lanzarote is home to only one golf course which is located in Costa Teguise. However, they are in the process of constructing a new golf course which is located just outside Puerto del Carmen (if you drive in the direction of Tias).

The Costa Teguise Golf Club is located at the foot of a volcano and has 18 holes with a 72 par on beautiful green grass. A villa in Puerto del Carmen puts you approximately 15 miles away from Costa Teguise and its golf club.

There is one water park in Lanzarote called AquaLanza, this is located next to the Golf Club in Costa Teguise. There is a wide range of slides and pools, making it an ideal day out for families. This aqua park features attractions for all ages, including ‘kamikaze’, ‘spiral’, ‘fast-river’, a children’s swimming pool, a restaurant area and a souvenir shop. For those who would rather enjoy their private villa in Puerto del Carmen at a slower place, the island is full of gorgeous natural wonders.

Timanfaya National park is 50 km² of volcanic landscape, known as the ‘Fire Mountains’. The national park was built to protect the beauty of the volcanic landscape. Visiting the park will give you close-up views of the volcanoes and teach you more about the history of the volcanic island.

El Golfo is a crater created by a volcano, it has filled with sea water and the algae in the water have caused it to go a deep green colour. Los Hervideros means boiling waters; there are caves and holes where lava used to run.

El Jardin del Cactus is a garden showing an impressive collection of Cacti, featuring well over 1,000 species. The restored windmill and strange metal sculptures make for an impressive contrast against the dry volcanic landscape.

Rancho Texas Theme Park is located just outside the resort, making it a popular destination for families staying at a villa in Puerto del Carmen.

Other attractions include:

- The Wine Museum

- Whale and Dolphin Museum

- Guinate Tropical Park

- Mirador del Rio, which was used as a lookout point, but is now a tourist centre and restaurant with fantastic views

Getting around while staying in a villa in Puerto del Carmen

If you do not want to rent a car when you stay at a villa in Puerto del Carmen, then you should consider travelling by bus. This is a very good way to explore the different areas in Lanzarote.

There is a regular bus service, which runs from Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife (every 20 minutes), Playa Blanca to Puerto del Carmen (with journeys limited to four or five per day) and Costa Teguise to Arrecife (every 20 minutes). The bus stops are clearly indicated on the roadside and fares are not much more than one Euro wherever you wish to go.

To return to Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca from Arrecife you have to wait for the bus by the beach near the Arrecife Medular. On Sunday, there is a local bus service to Teguise market from Puerto del Carmen which leaves the resort at 09.00 and 10.00, returning 12.00 and 13.30. There are bus routes to other parts of the island, but you will first have to find your way to the bus depot in Arrecife. The services are limited to one or two buses per day.

Weather to expect while enjoying a Puerto del Carmen villa holiday

Lanzarote enjoys mild climatic conditions all year round, so you can enjoy a luxury holiday villa rental in both summer and winter.

Rain: Lanzarote receives very little rainfall, mainly due to the rather flat nature of the island (its highest peak is 670 metres above sea level). While the higher western Canary Islands receive plenty of rain on their mountainous northerly slopes, the low hills of Lanzarote lack the altitude to cause rain. When Lanzarote does get rain, it tends to be between November and March, but even these times are quite dry – perfect if you’re seeking a villa to rent in Puerto del Carmen during less busy times.

Temperatures: During the winter months (November to February), temperatures normally rise to the mid-20s during the day, but can fall as low as 12° Celsius at night. For this reason, you will often hear advice to bring a fleece or light jacket with you just in case. During the hottest months (July to September), daytime temperatures can rise above 30° Celsius, especially in sheltered locations or if there is little wind and rarely fall below 20° Celsius at night.
