Victoria is the charming capital city of Gozo, also known among the Maltese as ‘Rabat’. The name was assigned in 1887 to honour Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, when the town was also raised to a city status. The sand-coloured capital is very picturesque and centres around the fortified Citadel that lies on top of a hill. Recently restored, a visit here is an absolute must with a myriad of historical and cultural treasures concealed within its labyrinthine streets. Learn about the city’s fascinating history in the Cathedral, Archaeology Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Natural Science Museum and the Old Prison, followed by a walk along the city walls for panoramic views over the whole of Gozo.
The main market square, It-Tokk, lies within the centre of Victoria. It is a great place to purchase local crafts in the market or just sit and watch the Islanders go about their day in one of the quaint outdoor cafes. Victoria's main street, Republic Street, is lined with shops, arcades, restaurants and two theatres, in which several music and dance events are held throughout the year. Don’t miss a visit to the beautiful Villa Rundle Public Gardens, an oasis of peace with a variety of trees and a fountain.
