Boasting the title of capital of Puglia, the historic commercial centre of Bari is home to a long seafront promenade, fascinating architecture and a modern shopping district. The airport in Bari serves the Northern part of Puglia which offers a wide selection of flights to and from UK airports.

For a thousand years Bari has been a busy commercial centre and trading port.  Initially the Romans had developed it into one of the most important towns on the Adriatic. But apart from its’ colourful history, Bari boasts a long seafront promenade which leads from Bari Vecchia to a more modern shopping district.

The Basilica of San Nicola is the most important building in Bari Vecchia and houses the remains of the patron saint. The Basilica we see today dates back to the end of the 12th century and is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. It is the focal point of Bari Vecchia (the old town) and thousands of pilgrims travel here each year from all over the world. The Fiesta di San Nicola runs from 7th-9th May each year in celebration of the arrival of the saint's relics in Bari and is definitely worth taking part in if you're in the area!

Bari Vecchia is a fascinating weave of streets and is now transformed into a wonderful area full of cafés, bars and restaurants, perfect for taking a stroll. Just a short walk from Piazza San Nicola are Bari's other major architectural attractions; The Cattedrale di San Sabino was also built by the Normans in a late 12th century, and the Castello Svevo, Emperor Frederick II's mighty fortress. For opera lovers, a trip to Bari should include a night at the Teatro Petruzzelli, the fourth largest opera house in Italy.

The Adriatic coastline is formed by a series of sandy and pebble beaches, salt pans of the Margherita di Savoia Nature Reserve and some lovely towns such as Trani, home to a fabulous sea-front cathedral. From Bari, the mostly rocky coast boasts the occasional spots of sandy beach, such as those at the lovely towns of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, which are well worth a visit both for the pretty historic towns and sandy beaches.
