A drive to the island’s southernmost point leads you to one of its most important historical landmarks, believed to be the origin of Lefkas’ name. The dramatic white cliffs are where the name is thought to come from (‘Lefkó’ meaning ‘white’ in Greek), although some say it stems from Lefkos, a companion of Odysseus who leapt from the rocks to escape Apollo. Either way, the scenery is stunning, and the Doukato Lighthouse has stood proudly on the cape since 1890.
One of Lefkas’ lesser-known gems is the Melissa Gorge, home to two captivating nature trails in the lush area of Sfakiotes. A walk here offers a true immersion into the island’s natural beauty, with flowing springs and greenery all around. Along the way, you’ll spot over 50 old watermills once used during the 19th century.
Kavalikefta is considered the top spot for windsurfing, thanks to the strong winds that breeze through year-round. It’s also a fantastic place for snorkelling and diving, offering an abundance of underwater life waiting to be explored.
