Top Things to Do in the Algarve

Portugal’s Algarve is one of our favourite European destinations thanks to its warm sunny climate, breath-taking beaches and mouth-watering cuisine. As well as this, there is just so much to do – if you can tear yourself away from your sun lounger that is!

Take a look at our guide and explore the top things you can do whilst visiting the Algarve.

The Algarve

Wine Tasting

Portugal is famous for its high quality wine – and for good reason! Thanks to its unique and specific location and climate, the Algarve region provides superb quality wines that you need to try for yourself! Why not take a visit to one of the many spiralling vineyards in the area and enjoy learning about wine production in Portugal.

Benagil Cave

The iconic Benagil sea cave is one of the most impressive sights in Europe. The cave has an opening in its ceiling which allows the blue skies to pour through, making for a very Instagrammable shot. Located east of Benagil beach, you can reach the caves by boat or kayak.

The Algarve is home to a number of waterparks, which are sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike. Aqualand is one the largest waterparks in Europe and features Kamikaze – the largest slide in Portugal measuring up at over 100ft! You could also treat your children to an experience they will never forget at Zoomarine, where they can swim with dolphins!

Church of Sao Lourenco

Situated in Almancil, the Church of Sao Lourenco (St Lawrence) is a truly striking piece of architecture. This stunning baroque church was built in the 18th century and features azulejo tiles which depict the life of Sao Lourenco. These tiles were created by Policarpo de Oliveria Bernardes and cover the sides and ceiling of the church.

The Algarve is very popular with golfers across Europe and is home to more than 40 different golf courses. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the sport, why not take a trip to one of the many golfing resorts and have a go at hitting a hole in one?

Praia da Marinha

According to the Michelin Guide, Praia da Marinha is one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and it has been classified as one of the best destinations in Europe by the EDEN European Destinations of Excellence. Praia de Marinha is surrounded by magnificent cliffs, caves and rock formations and you can follow a cliff-top walking trail for breath-taking views.

Lagos Old Town

Take a day (at least) to explore the gorgeous Lagos Old Town, still partly circled by its walls dating back to the 16th century. Pick up a free map from the tourist office and spend the day navigating the white-washed houses and cobbled streets of this beautiful town.
