A taste of traditional Mallorca
We are pleased to offer a selection of holiday villas in Porto Colom. Situated on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Porto Colom is without any doubt one of the most well preserved resorts on the east coast. There are many great properties available to rent in this particular area. Though officially the site of a tourist development area, the town is still active as a traditional fishing port and has managed to remain free from the signs of over commercialisation.
Sights and Activities
The sheltered bay of Porto Colom, with its fantastic scenery and typically laid-back, friendly Mallorcan atmosphere, is in sharp contrast to some of the more energetic resorts on the island. These resorts are only a short drive away from many of the villas in Porto Colom though. A luxury holiday at a villa in Porto Colom is ideal for those trying to avoid the mass commercialisation of a typical resort. Truly serene and very beautiful, it’s well worth a visit.
The main ‘tourist’ development centre is situated by the beautiful Cala Marcal. Serving as the main beach in the area of Porto Colom, this particular beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its cleanliness. It hosts volleyball and beach football competitions each summer. With its sloping sands and shallow waters this beach is ideal for families staying at a villa rental nearby. It’s just a 0.5km walk from the village of Porto Colom, which provides a selection of shops and restaurants – many of which are located around its stunningly picturesque harbour. There are also two good sized supermarkets in the area, which sell a wide selection of traditional Mallorcan specialties, as well as fresh fish, meat and British brand products.
Should you wish to retreat to a less crowded beach, when staying at a villa in Porto Colom, there are two more private locations very nearby; alternatively water taxis make daily trips to the beaches of Cala Figuera and Cala d’Or.
A trip to ‘La Reserva’ Nature Park is definite must for nature lovers staying at a villa in Porto Colom. With a variety of animals, local plants and over 2.5 million metres² of flourishing vegetation and caves to explore, there’s a huge amount of adventure to be had. There are also waterfalls to swim under, zip wires to speed down, rock faces to climb and a hanging bridge to navigate – great for the family to enjoy. Open all year round, the ‘La Reserva’ Nature Park is about an hour’s drive from Porto Colom.
Just a 20 minute drive up the coast to Porto Cristo, the three caves which together form the ‘Caves of Drach’ offer an interesting experience. Rather than guided tours, visitors are left to wander through in groups, allowing them the time to marvel at the fabulous stalagmites and stalactites adorning the caves. At the end of the most recently discovered cave there is an underground lake known as ‘Lago Martel.’ Here seats are provided, allowing visitors to watch and listen to the classical musicians, who enter the cave on boats to perform in a rather subterranean concert. Once this has concluded visitors have the opportunity to take a short boat ride on the underground lake. As these caves are very popular, tours can sometimes be a little overcrowded. In order to avoid this we recommend taking either the first or last tour of the day. The entrance price for adults is around €10-€15 although children under seven can get in for free.

However, for those wanting to round the night off with few drinks and a livelier atmosphere Cala D’Or can cater to this desire and is just a 15 minute taxi ride away.

Three Kings Celebrations: This celebration offers a great Mallorcan post-Christmas experience and is ideal for families. ‘The Three Kings’ arrive at the port by boat and lead a procession of locals up to the local church to pay homage to baby Jesus. ‘Sa Rua’: This is the traditional day of fancy dress in the town of Porto Cristo – which is just 20 minutes away from Porto Colom. The town comes alive with parades, street parties and people wearing brightly coloured costumes of all shapes and sizes can be seen in huge amount. Despite the jovial party atmosphere the fancy dress parades are serious business with many. Hour of work is put into creating and a significant amount of money put into hiring these wonderful costumers. The parade culminates in the harbour of Porto Cristo where local bands play music and everyone dances long into the night. Date: Early Feb.
