There are many attractions on the island including Corralejo in the far north, where straw hats are woven in the traditional manner, the many prehistoric sites and to the west, the Norman castle of Rico Roque, near Cotillo. The ancient capital of the island, Betancuria houses the church of Santa Maria, noted for its painted ceiling and murals.
