Part of the municipal district of Santanyi, Porto Petro is a tranquil and pretty fishing village that is to be found some 53km to the east of the capital Palma, and the International Airport.Despite being less than 2km south of the much larger and popular resort of Cala d’Or, the lack of a beach has ensured that Porto Petro has never blossomed into a busy tourist destination, instead retaining its character as a small, intimate resort, centred on a picturesque cove and natural harbour lined with fishing vessels and yachts. The village is flanked by wooded hills in which white villas nestle among pine and olive trees, while down by the marina white washed and stone cottages mix with simple restaurants and souvenir shops. The area only has a population of 500 residents although this swells in the summer months.Although no beach exists within the resort, there are plenty just beyond the village such as the two sandy beaches of S’Amarador and Cala Mondragó which can be reached on foot, by car or the mini train which runs along this stretch of coast as far as Cala Mondragó. Boat trips are also available as well as excursions in glass bottomed boats.Venturing south from the village is the Mondragó National Park which covers some 2000 acres of wetland and forests in the east of the island. A nature lover's paradise, it is brimming with many indigenous species of animals and plants and thoughtful, clearly indicated trails have been created for walkers. The park is home to martens, genets and hedgehogs as well as a wide variety of bird species. If coming by car, the N’Alis car park offers useful walking maps of the local terrain. For those wanting some shopping therapy, there are markets at nearby Santanyi on Wednesdays, and at Felanitx, 10kms away, every Sunday morning. The busier resort of Cala D’Or also provides those seeking nightlife with its many late night bars and restaurants.Porto Petro is located just along the coast from Cala D’Or and is a small select resort with a picturesque harbour, delightful waterfront fish restaurants and a small selection of cafes and shops. Once a trading port, it is now home to the Reial Club Nàutic (Royal Sailing Club) and most of the boats here are small pleasure craft. It is the gateway to the National Park Mondrago, a protected natural area containing the beautiful white sand beaches of Cala Mondrago and S'Amarador, and the surrounding countryside characterised by quiet country lanes, fields of almond, fig and carob trees and dry stone walls and houses. New development in Porto Petro is fairly limited and the property market consists mainly of resale apartments, villas and beautiful fincas in the surrounding countryside.
