Pollensa

A real hidden treasure

We are pleased to offer a hand picked selection of holiday villas in Pollensa. Situated on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Majorca, the town of Pollensa boasts its preserved charm, history and culture alongside two beautiful mountain ranges. This traditional Mallorcan town is just 6km from Puerto Pollensa and Cala San Vincente. Mostly untouched by tourists the maze of narrow and windy cobbled streets, tall stone houses and copious amount of churches give the town a character all of its own.


Sights and Activities

 

With spectacular views of mountainous headlands and an abundance of historic interest a Pollensa villa holiday is perfect for culture-cravers! Boasting a vast historical heritage this Pollensa offers visitors a chance to explore the ancient town and seek out all of its hidden treasures; it really is an amazing, cultural, and picturesque location. It’s many points of interest include the ‘Steps of Calvario’ leading up from the town square boasting a magnificent view at the summit; ‘Via Crucis’ a long stone stairway bordered by Cypress trees where once at the top one can view the statue of ‘Mare de Deu del Peu de la Creu’ (Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross) inside the small hilltop chapel. Pollensa also boasts many churches of architectural beauty as well as two museums housing an array of paintings, sculptures, gothic art, textiles and archeological artefacts. If you are looking to stay in an attractive old town, steeped in history, then Pollensa is the place for you.

 

Just a 15-20 minute drive from most of our Pollensa villas is the ‘Hidropark Alcúdia’; a huge water park with many slides and pools which is open every day from the beginning of May until the end of October, making for a fantastic family day out. The price for adults and children over the age of 12 is around €18, children aged 3-11 around €10 and for children under the age of 3 entrance to the park is free. (‘SuperGolf’ and cloakroom carry extra charges).

 

There are also plenty of opportunities to play some golf on your villa holiday in Pollensa. Mallorca is famed for its excellent 9 and 18 hole courses golf courses, with no less than 14 courses on the island, offering a variety of different challenges for the keen golfer. The nearest to Pollensa being Golf Pollensa’s 9 hole course (2.5km) and Club de Golf Alcanada’s 18 hole course (14km) where the green fees vary from around €45 to €100. Buggies, trolleys and clubs are all available to hire at both clubs, however please be aware that soft-spike shoes are required for all courses.

 

Attracting visitors from far afield, the weekly market takes place every Sunday morning in the town’s main square. Offering up an abundance of regional goods and produce, from fruit and vegetables to antiques and handicrafts the market also provides a good reason to sit in one of the many bars or cafes and have some tasty tapas and thirst quenching refreshments.

 

Located just a ten minute drive away is Puerto Pollensa, Pollensa’s main port and old fishing town. Along with a vast promenade and marina where the sea front is lined with excellent shops and restaurants boasting a menu of the local daily catch, this enchanting area also comprises more traditional Spanish style cafés just a short stroll into the backstreets. Just past the marina the much sought-after area of Pine Walk plays host to the babble of pedestrians taking their daily stroll along the pine tree lined walkway with its many cafes, restaurants and bars.

 

For nature lovers Mallorca possesses an abundance of nature and cycle trails from beachfront to mountainside which are an excellent way to view the island. Bicycles are available to hire locally from around €8-€20 per day.

 

Just a twenty minute drive from the centre of Pollensa is the ‘Parc Natural de S’Albufera’, a wildlife reserve housing thousands of wild plant and bird species.

 

Nightlife.

 

Our Pollensa villa holidays are a good choice for those looking for more low key nightlife.

 

Pollensa attracts families and couples young and old, the atmosphere is relaxed and quiet. Despite the fact that there are many bars, they are not the typical establishments you would expect to find in a livelier resort, but the café-bistros are of exceptionally high standards. The restaurants in Pollensa are famed for being outstanding. Being blessed with some truly fabulous restaurants, both in terms of atmosphere and quality of food, there is an eclectic mix of cuisine in Pollensa which boasts some of the finest international and Mallorcan dishes on the island.

 

Alternatively only 20 minutes drive from Pollensa costing around €15-€20 by taxi, Alcúdia port has broader range of bars, clubs and a bustling atmosphere.

And for those seeking a slightly more energetic nightlife ‘The Golden Mile’ just outside of Alcúdia’s Port is a must. Packed to the rafters with bustling bars and restaurants of all themes and nationalities, this strip most definitely provides something to keep everyone entertained!

Additionally, if you provide ‘Chef a Casa’ with a shopping list they will complete your shop and have it delivered prior to your arrival at the villa.

Events

 

January/February

 

Pi de Sant Antoni: The Saint Antoni celebrations are held in a great number of towns of the island however the most popular of the fiestas is held in Pollensa. The morning festivities include a mass of float parades and the blessing of the animals, followed by the traditional journey to fetch the popular "Pi" (pine tree). The neighbourhood then helps carry the "pi" to the square Plaça Vella where it is righted and a competition between all the young men of the town takes place whereby they try to climb the no less than 20 metre high tree.

Carnival: In the last few days leading up to lent the streets of Alcúdia are awash with people, colour and of course food stalls! With parades, fancy dress costumes of all shapes and sizes, and prizes given for the best costumes of the week!

Date: February - Week prior to Lent.

 

March/April

 

Semana Santa: Arguably one of the most important religious holidays throughout Spain ‘Semana Santa’ (Easter) with massive processions and celebrations. Parades and floats align the streets for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday working their way through the town and port area.

Date: Easter week.

 

'Fira del Vi': Taking place every year in the Santo Domingo Cloister, the Pollensa Wine Festival grants the Wine Estates in Mallorca and the Balearics the opportunity to present their wines to the public. A great opportunity to sample the island’s produce with many of the Mallorcan wineries having won national and international prizes for their wines!

May/June

 

Corpus Christi: A traditional day in Catholic calendar for feasting in celebration of the ‘Eucharist’. This celebration is held all over Spain and the Balearics but is particularly colourful in Pollensa with the dances of ‘Les Àguiles’ and ‘Sant Joan Pelós’. These characters are depicted by locals as part of the procession, one dressed in white and gold and the other in brightly coloured silks with a lamb under one arm.

July/August

 

‘Festes de la Verge del Carme’: a week long celebration of the patron saint of sailors with concerts and games. Including performances by many local groups, bands and artists this is a real must for those keen on experiencing Mallorcan culture. On the final day after mass, the traditional maritime procession with statues of ‘La Verge del Carme’ and ‘Sant Pere’ proceeds to the bay where ‘Sant Pere’ is placed on a boat and sailed around the bay with a plethora of decorated boats in toe. The entire procession culminates in a huge fireworks display, illuminating the entire bay.

Date: Mid July, varies annually.

 

‘Patrona de Pollensa’: An entire week of celebrations of the Patron Saint of Pollensa including a mock battle of the Christians (dressed in white) vs the Moors (dressed in multi-colours) commemorating the original battle in 1550, as well as singing, dancing, live music, fire works and other celebration activities.

Date: End July/Start August.
 

September/October

 

La Fira: An annual trade fair displaying a wide variety of local products and produce. At the weekend the streets of Alcúdia play host to a procession of figures throughout Mallorcan history. Definitely worth the 15 minute journey to Alcúdia.

November/December

 

Christmas: Midnight mass on Christmas Eve, various nativity scenes (the best winning prizes) and magnificent New Years Eve celebrations.
