Pi de Sant Antoni: The Saint Antoni celebrations are held in a great number of towns of the island. However, the most popular of the fiestas is held in Pollensa. The morning festivities include a mass of float parades and the blessing of the animals, followed by the traditional journey to fetch the popular ‘pi’ (pine tree). The neighbourhood then helps carry the ‘pi’ to the square Plaça Vella – where it is righted – and a competition between all the young men of the town takes place whereby they try to climb the tree, which is no less than 20 metres high.
In the last few days leading up to Lent the streets of Alcúdia are awash with people, colour and, of course, food stalls! The carnival features parades, fancy dress costumes of all shapes and sizes, and prizes given for the best costumes of the week!
Semana Santa: Arguably one of the most important religious holidays in Spain, ‘Semana Santa’ (Easter) is celebrated with massive processions. Parades and floats line the streets for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, working their way through the town and port area.
'Fira del Vi': Taking place every year in the Santo Domingo Cloister, the Pollensa Wine Festival grants the wine estates in Mallorca and the Balearics the opportunity to present their wines to the public. This is a great opportunity to sample the island’s produce with many of the Mallorcan wineries having won national and international prizes for their wines!
Corpus Christi: A traditional day in the Catholic calendar for feasting in celebration of the Eucharist. This celebration is held all over Spain and the Balearics but is particularly colourful in Pollensa, with the dances of ‘Les Àguiles’ and ‘Sant Joan Pelós’. These characters are depicted by locals as part of the procession, one dressed in white and gold and the other in brightly coloured silks with a lamb under one arm.
‘Festes de la Verge del Carme’: a weeklong celebration of the patron saint of sailors with concerts and games. With performances by many local groups, bands and artists, this is a real must for those keen on experiencing Mallorcan culture. On the final day after mass, the traditional maritime procession – with statues of ‘La Verge del Carme’ and ‘Sant Pere’ – proceeds to the bay where ‘Sant Pere’ is placed on a boat and sailed around the bay with a plethora of decorated boats in toe. The entire procession culminates in a huge fireworks display, illuminating the entire bay.
‘Patrona de Pollensa’: An entire week of celebrations of the Patron Saint of Pollensa, including a mock battle of the Christians (dressed in white) versus the Moors (dressed in multi-colours) commemorating the original battle in 1550, as well as singing, dancing, live music, fireworks and other celebration activities.
La Fira: An annual trade fair displaying a wide variety of local products and produce. At the weekend the streets of Alcúdia play host to a procession of figures throughout Mallorcan history. This fair is definitely worth the 15 minute journey to Alcúdia.
Christmas: Midnight mass on Christmas Eve, various nativity scenes (with prizes for the best) and magnificent New Years Eve celebrations.
