Paphos is one of the most ancient towns in Cyprus – during the Roman era it was the capital of the island. Now, though, it is a small harbour that is becoming a popular tourist destination, and there are many private villas in Paphos which offer holidaymakers the chance to experience this historic town in luxurious style.

With its beautiful countryside, the cosmopolitan resort is home to some ancient historical sites, but also plays host to many modern-day activities, such as sports, which run throughout the year.

Beaches

Paphos has to be one of the most attractive beach holidays destinations in Europe, with sunshine all year round, seawater at the perfect temperature, beautiful sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Across the miles of coastline stretching alongside the city of Paphos, you will find clear blue, crystal waters and Blue Flag beaches – the perfect backdrop for your holiday villa rental.

There are a number of great beaches in Paphos, but the most popular beach is Coral Bay Beach, located approximately five miles north of Paphos. Coral Bay beach is considered to be the best beach in Cyprus – its horseshoe-shaped bay and its delicately sloped incline make it a very family-friendly beach. The beach also has plenty of water sport facilities, catering for waterskiing and windsurfing, amongst other activities.

Golf

There are four golf courses in the Paphos region, with spectacular views, luxurious locations and superb facilities. They are far from the hustle and bustle of the resorts, but near enough for easy access. The courses are: Aphrodite Hills, Minthis Hills Golf Club, The Secret Valley Golf Club and Elea Estate Golf Club.

Things to Do

There are plenty of activities to take part in when you stay at a luxury villa in Paphos – anything from teeing off at one of the tournament-class golf courses to racing round a track in a go-kart.

Water Sports

Paphos is the ideal spot for a wide range of water sports. You can take a ride on banana boats or pedalos, or go wind surfing, sailing, water-skiing, canoeing, paragliding, yachting, jet skiing – the list is almost endless!

Water Park

Paphos is home to the largest water park in Cyprus, and the biggest family rafting ride in Europe: http://www.aphroditewaterpark.com/

Diving

There are many dive centres in Paphos, with activities ranging on offer for divers of all levels – from beginners to fully-qualified divers.

Go-Karting

Amusement Parks

Ithaki Amusement Park and Mini Golf is a great place to take the kids. It has a video games arcade, and there is a play area for smaller children with swings and slides – as well as a cafe bar.

Paphos Bird and Animal Park

The park’s boundaries encompass more than 1 million square metres of natural landscape, with plenty of beautiful lakes, ponds and gardens. It houses one of the largest private collections of birds in the world, and also operates a child-friendly petting zoo. For those who are booking a villa to rent in Cyprus with a young family in tow, Paphos Bird and Animal Park is highly recommended as a great kid-friendly day out.

Sightseeing and Museums

Paphos is one of the most historically-significant locations on the island of Cyprus. If you’re staying at a villa in Paphos and go-karting or water sports aren’t your thing, then why not visit one of these culturally-rich sights? Paphos Fort - This was built on the entrance to the harbour to defend from any attacks from seafaring foes, and was then used as a prison in later years. Visitors can cross a drawbridge to explore the dungeons, or climb to the battlements to experience extensive views across the bay and harbour.

Early Christian Basilica, St Paul's Pillar - A religious site, where allegedly St Paul was given 39 lashes when he came to the island. The small Roman Catholic church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa (Agia Kyriaki), built in the 12th century, is still used for Catholic mass.

Agia Solomoni and Agios Lamprianos Catacombs - There are around 20 steps down to the church, where you will find the remains of religious paintings covering the walls. There are also some very old catacombs and an old terebinth tree which is adorned with pieces of cloth left by pilgrims.

Byzantine Museum A small museum which mainly houses religious items.
District Archaeological Museum
A large museum featuring finds from local excavations, including Greek, Roman and medieval items.
