Just a short drive from our luxury villas in Alcúdia is the ‘Hidropark Alcúdia’, a huge water park with many slides and pools. The park is open every day from the beginning of May until the end of October, making for a fantastic family day out. The price for adults and children over the age of 12 is around €18, for children aged three to 11, around €10, and for children under the age of 3, entrance to the park is free (‘SuperGolf’ and cloakroom carry extra charges).
If you want a more cultural experience during your stay at a villa in Alcúdia, then you’ll be pleased to know that the town boasts a vast historical heritage, offering sightseers an historic mix of archaeological sites, traditional buildings, its own museum, and a local historic bullring which still stages fights today. The walled town also plays host to a bi-weekly market (Tuesday and Sunday) offering an abundance of regional goods and produce, from fruit and vegetables to antiques and handicrafts.
Situated towards the northern end of Alcúdia’s extensive beach is Puerto Alcúdia, Alcúdia’s main port and fishing village. Three Kings Celebrations: ‘The three kings’ arrive at the port by boat to give presents to the children after which the ‘kings’ continue on to the local church to pay homage to baby Jesus. A procession then heads towards the town centre where the nativity scene is re-enacted.
Saint Antoni Abat: A two-night celebration of the patron saint of animals. Huge bonfires are lit on the first night, illuminating the entire town whilst music plays and locals cook food on the bonfires. On the second night the traditional blessing of the animals takes place at Sant Jaume (Saint James’ Church).
Carnival: In the last few days leading up to Lent, the streets of Alcúdia are awash with people, colour and – of course – food stalls! With parades, fancy dress costumes of all shapes and sizes, and prizes given for the best costumes of the week, this carnival is a must-see sight for those staying at villas in Alcúdia.
Semana Santa: Arguably one of the most important religious holidays in Spain, ‘Semana Santa’ (Easter) features massive processions and celebrations. Parades and floats align the streets for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and work their way through the town and port area.
Sant Pere: A weeklong celebration of the patron saint of sailors with concerts and games. The official procession for the patron saint of sailors takes up just one day, beginning at a local church and descending to the port where a statue of Sant Pere is placed on a boat and sailed around the bay, with a plethora of decorated boats in toe. The entire procession culminates in a huge fireworks display, illuminating the entire bay.
Mare de Déu de la Victòria: A two-day celebration of one of the patron saints of Alcúdia, including dancing, concerts, mass and games.
Sant Jaume: Patron saint of Alicante. A week-long celebration dedicated to the patron saint James of Alicante. Overflowing with concerts, dancing and religious ceremonies.
Chinese lantern evening: A very vibrant and lively celebration with young children carrying Chinese lanterns and singing old songs through the streets.
La Fira: An annual trade fair displaying a wide variety of local products and produce. At the weekend the streets of Alicudia play host to a procession of figures from Mallorcan history
Christmas: Midnight mass on Christmas Eve, various nativity scenes (the best winning prizes) and magnificent New Years Eve celebrations.
