The islands have a dramatic and varied coastline, dominated by bays, coves and capes as well as rugged landscapes a
nd cliffs. As beautiful as they are unpredictable, you never know what stunning landscape awaits from one stretch of coastline to the next.
As well as boasting some of Europe's most stunning coastal regions, the Balearics offer a memorable interior landscape. Mountain peeks compete for attention under cloudless blue skies and offer a dramatic backdrop to traditionally whitewashed villages and towns. Mallorca has the largest mountains in the Balearics, with summits reaching an impressive 1,445 metres (Puig Major) and 1,340 metres (Puig de Masanella).
There are no large rivers on the islands due to the moderate rainfall, with the waterways being dominated by watercourses and torrents, the permeable soil and the actual size of the islands themselves.
The subsoil however has given rise to major caves of extraordinary beauty, that include the Caves of Drach and the Arta Caves in Mallorca, and Xoroi cave in Menorca.
The Balearic Islands are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. The Balearic islands form an autonomous province in themselves. They can be found just off the east coast of Valencia. The closest island lies 85 km from the mainland, whilst the furthest lies 333 km away.
