Gran Canaria is the second largest of the four main Canary Islands, round in shape. The airport, Las Palmas is situated on the East coast of the island.
Almost all of the holiday resorts in Gran Canaria have beautiful sandy beaches. Some have been sculpted by waves hitting the volcanic rocks over centuries to create fabulous dark sand, sometimes called black sand. Other beaches have been enlarged or totally man made by the importation of golden sand.
On the south cost of Gran Canaria is Maspalomas beach and sand dunes. Considered the best beach on the island you will find rolling hills of glorious golden sand that has been blown over from the Sahara desert by storms over millions of years.
The liveliest resort is Playa del Ingles, situated close behind Maspalomas beach, followed by Puerto Rico. However all resorts featured in our Gran Canaria villa selection have a variety of bars and restaurants most of which offer excellent and friendly customer service.
Due to the climate and great weather all year round, most bars and restaurants offering alfresco dining.
Maspalomas
Some of our Gran Canaria villas are located in Maspalomas, which is a sophisticated resort on the southern tip of Gran Canaria. The quiet, upmarket resort offers peace and tranquillity to the holiday makers. It is one of the oldest touristic towns in Gran Canaria. There are over 6km of soft, sandy beaches, including the famous sand dunes.
Maspalomas is separated from Playa de Ingles, resort, by a spectacular undulating sea of sand dunes, a protected area that provides a habitat for some rare species of flora and fauna, and a favourite haunt for nudists.
Gran Canaria Beaches
Fine sandy beaches backed by spectacular, wind-sculpted dunes, set against the blue crystal sea. The beach is split into four zones, one part for families and children, two sections for nudists and the fourth for the gay community. There is an array of beach bars, restaurants and shops along the front and water sports and leisure facilities on the beach. Maspalomas beach is a paradise for beach lovers, sun seekers and families.
The Playa de Ingles beach, the other side of the sand dunes, is nearly 3km long and is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. The beach offers all sorts of leisure and sports activities such as jet-ski, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and many more.
Gran Canaria Shopping
If you want some retail therapy on your Gran Canaria holiday, you won't be disappointed. The main shopping centre in Maspalomas is the Faro 2 complex. This houses many designer shops, boutiques, cafes and bars. There are around a dozen shopping centres in Maspalomas and surrounding areas, all offering similar sort of produce. The biggest one is the Yumbo centre in Playa del Ingles.
Gran Canaria Markets
The largest flea market in Gran Canaria is held in the Faro 2 shopping centre, it is held on a Sunday between 8am and 1pm. The markets are devoted to fruit and vegetables and everything else from clothes, to household goods to furnishings, cloth, toys, music and most things that you might need. The market is very popular with locals and foreign residents alike.
Gran Canaria Activities
You wont get a chance to be bored on your Gran Canaria villa holiday. There are plenty of activities to do in Maspalmas other than laze on the beach. There are a number of water sports on the beach, paragliding, jet-skiing, scuba diving and more.
Aqualand – a must for all families, a range of slides, pools and rides.
Casa de Colon – Museum about Christopher Columbus and his early transatlantic voyages.
Go Karting Club – People of all ages can enjoy racing around the different tracks.
Holiday World - The largest funfair on the Canary Islands features numerous exciting attractions such as a classic 27-metre-high Ferris wheel, a rollercoaster, dodgems, shooting stalls, seal and parrot shows and many more things to entertain the kids. It also comprises a leisure centre including a bowling alley, amusement arcades, a wellness centre with a health spa and a high-tech gym, various cafés and restaurants as well as two nightclubs (one of which is a salsa club)
Museo Canario – Museum in Las Palmas, gives an expansive overview of life for Gran Canarias original inhabitants.
Pueblo Canario - A complex of several traditionally-built island houses with the famous wooden carved balconies form a typical Canarian village with gates, turrets and an atrium.
Camel Rides – One of the most popular activities on the island.
Boat Trips – A variety of different trips available, including a booze cruise, glass bottomed boats, banana boats and many more.
There is also an aquarium, a zoo, museums, monuments and scenic spots – an activity for everyone.
Gran Canaria Golf
There are plenty of opportunities to play some golf on your Gran Canaria villa holiday. There are 4 golf courses in the South of Gran Canaria:
Maspalomas Golf offers an extremely long and flat course with lengthy, wide lanes. Even on the hottest days, the proximity of the sea and the mild breezes cooled by the trade winds, make a visit to this course an unforgettable experience. This 18-hole, course plays host to a number of international competitions, and has a practice green, driving range, instructors, facilities for the hire of carts, bags and clubs, shop, restaurant and snack bars.
Salobre Golf & Resort is one of the newest golf clubs in Gran Canaria, set in magnificent scenery with volcanic landscapes typical of the south of the island. Indeed, the lush greenery of the course is a complete contrast to its surrounding sand dunes. The 18-hole Salobre Sur course covers 6 km and the more complexed Salobre Norte, likewise features 18 holes. Salobre’s facilities include a golf school, practice area, driving range, putting green, club hire, hydro-massage, pro-shop and restaurant with terrace.
Also Anfi Tauro Golf Course and Meloneras Golf course are close by.
